Bernese Mountain Dogs

The Bernese Mountain Dog comes from the farms around Bern in Switzerland, where it drove cattle, pulled carts of milk to market and kept an eye on the yard. It is the only long-coated breed among the four Swiss mountain dogs, and the FCI recognises it as breed No. 45, in Group 2.

The coat is tricolour: deep black with rust-red markings and white on the chest, muzzle, feet and tail tip, usually with a white blaze between the eyes. Males stand around 64–70 cm at the withers and females around 58–66 cm.

Bernese are good-natured and attached to their people, and they grow up slowly — many stay puppyish well into their second or third year. They are a heavy breed with a shorter life expectancy than most dogs, which is why the health results of both parents matter so much.

Unfortunately, similar to other large breeds, Bernese are prone to certain health conditions. In particular you should be aware of any health conditions that can be carried to puppy from its parents and grandparents, such as, hip dysplasia, elbow dysplasia, cancer and any problematic behaviour.

While puppy is still growing it is important not to overwhelm him with exercise, but ensure light and regular walks. This, as well as, healthy diet and not over feeding your puppy can help to avoid hip and elbow dysplasia.
